Renewable Solutions: How Solar Energy Combats Nonrenewable Energy’s Damage

Nonrenewable energy can have damaging effects on the environment and those who live in it. Renewable energy sources can combat environmental hazards and benefit communities. Here’s how solar energy can help keep the Earth clean and aid in public health:

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

When fossil fuels are used to generate power, they give off a harmful emission called greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases contribute to the increase in temperatures worldwide and can lead to climate change. Because some greenhouse gases can stay in the atmosphere for thousands of years, the decisions we all make today will impact future generations and our planet immensely. The more people who switch to solar (or another clean renewable energy), the less fossil fuels will be used to power the Earth, and the healthier it will be for years to come.

Air Pollution and Respiratory Issues

Common greenhouse gases are nitrous oxides, sulfur dioxide, and carbon dioxide. While these gases are naturally found in the air, they are damaging in excessive amounts. When they are pumped into the air, they not only pollute the atmosphere, but they also cause health problems for people. These issues are disproportionality more common in disadvantaged neighborhoods located near harmful power plants or other large-scale industrial operations. Carbon dioxide is an asphyxiant when it is in gas form. Greenhouse gases can also lead to bronchitis and other respiratory problems. Because solar panels only collect the energy from sun, there are no harmful emissions. With no emissions, solar energy does not contribute to air pollution. When it comes to public health and safety, renewable energy is the cleanest and most sustainable solution for communities everywhere.

Water Pollution

Fossil fuels can cause a significant amount of damage to the Earth’s water supply. When these fuels are harvested, they can release pollutants into the surrounding soil, which can damage ground water. Acid rain is another side effect of fossil fuel consumption. Acid rain can damage aquatic animals and plants, and can also strip nutrients from the soil and reduce agricultural production. Additionally, oil spills and gas leaks threaten the health and well-being of both communities and our environment.

Clean and renewable energy offers solutions to nearly every problem presented by nonrenewable and damaging energy sources.
