Solar panels require little maintenance, but there are easy steps you can take to ensure your system is producing the most energy it possibly can! Monitoring your system closely will prevent issues that could worsen if they go unnoticed, and well-watched panels are easier to take care of in the long run. Here are five simple tips to make sure your solar panel system is in tip-top shape:

1. Cleaning
We recommend an annual cleaning, which can usually be scheduled through your solar panel company. Since we live in a fairly dusty climate, spraying your panels off with a hose when they appear dusty will increase their productivity. We recommend contacting your solar provider for any further cleaning needed. However, simply monitoring and keeping dust off after major storms or windy days can make a huge difference. Do not use metal or abrasive tools to clean your panels. To schedule a checkup or cleaning, contact us here!

2. Shading issues
Keep track of any new shading issues that may arise. Tree branches, leaf litter, and other objects can obstruct your panels. Making sure there are no objects in the way will ensure your panels are getting the most out of their surface area. Trimming any plants that are shading your system will enhance its performance.

3. Make observations
Throughout the year, weather and other issues can affect the orientation, cables and performance of your panels. Simply watching them and keeping track of any visible changes can prevent permanent damage. If you notice cables that are broken, cracked or loose, or see something wrong with the orientation of the panels, call your solar company and get the issue fixed right away.

4. Know your inverter
When you picked your solar panels, you also picked an inverter. Reading the manual instructions for your inverter can help you maintain a highly efficient system. Things you should know about your inverter’s performance include maintenance signals, like alerts, symbols or power lights, that may appear. You may not be able to fix the issue that arises right away, but noticing issues promptly will ensure you are getting the most out of your solar generating system. For more information on how inverters work and why they are important, check out this blog.

5. Monitor your use
This tip is for anyone who is trying to go the extra mile to make sure their system is producing consistently daily and throughout the year. Your inverter most likely displays its energy production for the day, and some even track it online for you. By monitoring your daily production, you can detect weaknesses in your system at the onset. During storms or cloudy weather, your system will take a dip in production – keep track of these days so you can see how your system performs during these times as well. If you notice that your system is producing less, especially during clear sunny days, contact your solar provider to come out for a maintenance check.

Solar systems are fairly easy to take care of, and these five tips can increase the performance and longevity of your panels. Your solar panel company should be the go-to for making sure your system is working properly and efficiently. If you’re ready to make the switch to solar with a company that will have your back, contact SunHarvest Solar today!

also making simple changes to your home and vehicle can make solar add up even faster.
Add more insulation.
Add Solar Screen.
Use good USA CREE LED lights.
Drive Electric, 50 cents of electricity replaces a gallon $3 of gas.
Charge at Night Off Peak to help the GRID and some have low Off Peak Rates.

I wonder if it isn’t about the wattage of the panels as much as it is the cost per watt installed. If a 500 watt panel is bigger and dramatically more expensive that current 350ish watt standard size panels, so what? Outside of niche applications, who cares? Show me a 425 watt panel of the current form factor that is half of today’s price per panel and I will talk to you about how it is shaping the solar industry.
